Greek Mythology is the body of myths & legends belonging to the ancient greeks concernig their gods and heroes, the nature of the world & the origins & significance of their own cult and ritual practises. They wewe a part of religion in ancient Greece. Mordern scholars refer to the myths & study them in an attempt to throw light n the religious & political institutions of Ancient Greece, on the ancient greek civilization, & to gain understand ding of the nature of myth making itself......
Greek mythology is embioded explicity in a large collection of narratives & implicity in represent natinol arts, such as vase-paintings & votive gifts. Greek myth explains the origin of the world & details the lives & adventures of a wide variety of gods & goddesses, heroes & heroines, & other mythological creature. These accounts initially were disseminated in an oral-peotic tradition; today the Greek myths are known primarily from Greek litreture.
The oldest known Greek litretury sources the epic peoms LLiad & Odyssey, focus on events surrounding the Trojan War. Two peoms by Homer's near contemporary Hesiod, the Theogany & the Works & Days, contain accounts of the genesis of the world the succession of the human ages, the origin of human woes, & the origin of sacrificial practices Myths also are preserved in the Homeric Hymns, in fragements of epic peoms of the Epic Cycle, in lyric peoms, in the works of the tragedians of the fifth century BC, in writings of scholars & poets of the Hellenstic Age & in tect from the time of the Roman Empire by writers such as Plutarch & Pausanias.
